A Forest in Our Future?
Japan, as always, is on the bleeding edge of merging technology and art to create an entirely different concept completely. Nowhere else in the world is the design of a product more important then in Japan, and that attention to aesthetics shows through in thousands of devices we use every day. One of the leading Japanese service providers, KDDI au recently hosted a display of conceptual art and mobile telephony products entitled Mobile in Forest.
In a stylized forest environment, some of Japan’s finest young designers and artists showcased their visions of mobile phones blending into the very fabric of our lives, just as traditional phones and television did, until the line between device and art blurs completely. In fact, some of the phone cradles and accessories in the show transform the phone itself into a objet d’art - useful and beautiful and at the same time a comment on modern society and design. Heady, fascinating stuff.
After the jump I am attaching some pictures of my favorites, though since I don’t read or understand Japanese I have no idea who the designers are…but they sure look good.

I love the concept above, where it appears phones are plugged into a device called a Music Cage, which I assume is a birdcage-like speaker for music or speakerphone use.
A very cute charger for a kid’s phone…or anyone with a thing for metallic bears.
Never miss a call due to sleeping again, when you store the phone in a matching pillow.
I adore the mood and style of these paintings very much, but I have one question…When it rings, how do you make sure you grab the real phone?
